Description
Here's another one for my friends down under! The sooty shearwater is among the birds that Captain Cook would have encountered as he went into Botany Bay in Australia. It is an interesting bird in that it breeds in the Southern Hemisphere and makes a migration through Japan, Siberia, Alaska and California in a circuitous route and sometimes travels more than 40 thousand miles in a year. Captain Cook's ship was the HMS Endeavour that was later renamed the Lord Sandwich and used to transport Hessian troops to the colonies in the American Revolutionary War and was scuttled in the harbor of Newport, Rhode Island, along with other ships to block the harbor and prevent the French ships from entering the port and coming to the aid of the colonists. Its remains have been recently discovered and identified at the bottom of the harbor.
