Description
I drew this from a photo I once made in Yellowstone National Park along the Madison River in Wyoming. The coyote was stalking a mule deer that had just given birth. She made it to a little island in the river and the coyote didn't want to wade the water. So he or she mostly just sat on the north bank of the river and watched the deer as if he or she had all the time in the world. I never did see a fawn, but the afterbirth still clung to the deer. I also figured this coyote had not got the fawn or else he or she would probably not have been so persistent. Of course, some other coyote or predator may have gotten it. It is difficult to see nature play out this way, but that is part of the cycle of life. I sat on the south side of the river for over two hours and watched this thing play out, but the coyote had more patience than I did. All was at a standstill when I left. So I don't know how it was finally resolved. Since that time, we are now plagued by coyotes here on the farm in Virginia. We have lost two baby goats and two of my house cats to them in the last fifteen months. Of course, we don't sit by with any patience here.
