Description
In 1716, Governor Alexander Spotswood, governor of the Virginia colony, led an expedition of about 62 men across the Blue Ridge Mountains at Swift Run Gap into the Shenandoah Valley. Afterwards, he had pins made with small golden horseshoes for the members of the expedition. The members of the expedition came to be known as "The Knights of the Golden Horseshoe". It is a piece of Virginia history that was first taught to students in the fourth grade when I was young, which was only 63 years ago.

How wonderful that you have brought this interesting piece of history back to life with this richly textured painting.

Love the commanding style & palette. Very interesting story behind the painted narrative.

Beautiful work, Danny! Love the lush brushstrokes and simplicity. I don't remember hearing about that expedition - must have been daydreaming - or drawing surreptitiously. I often got in trouble for that.

Danny, great work of art. I love the history behind it. I bet they don't teach that story today. f/l
